Every year in early spring we plant a few vegetables in our backyard raised bed garden. This past year, we embarked on an opportunity to be on the west coast for an extended time. Tending a garden was not in the cards. Not wanting the weeds to take up residence while we were away, I made a last minute decision to just "throw in" some zinnia seeds before going out the door - without expectations. When we returned home several months later, we were astounded by the beautiful flowers in bloom that thrived in the summer heat. What a homecoming! The zinnias dazzled us with color all summer long and entertained us with many species of visiting butterflies. Now we will have a tough decision to make for next year. Hmmmm....cucumbers vs. zinnias??? To be continued...
